Summer’s Coming … Get Out The Sweaters

Summer’s coming and with it air conditioning … and though you can’t live without it, one person’s comfort can be another person’s chill.

Since I never seem to win the battle of the thermostat, I learned to stop complaining, stock up on cardigans and carry them everywhere – the trick is finding them in materials and colors that won’t look like you raided your winter-storage and are about to go snowboarding.

The Boyfriend Cardigan from Victoria’s Secret for $29 comes in a ton of colors, the cut looks great in the office or over a pair of cut offs and a t-shirt, and the silk and cashmere feels amazing on your skin and will keep you warm without bulk.

St. Pat’s Indulgences …

I LOVE St. Patrick’s Day! But unlike the younger me, who put green streaks in my hair, now I accessorize with some super-cute green pieces that can do double duty the rest of the year.

Some of my favorites:

Antica Murina Veneziana’s Green Murano Glass Snake Pendant with gold highlights on a multicolor lace necklace is an eye-catching reminder of the legend of St. Patrick and the snakes, and for $59 it’s a collectable everyone can afford to wear year-round.

For a more practical indulgence, Forzieri’s Ostrich-embossed leather ID wallet in lime is only $86. Love it, but green isn’t your everyday look? It’s also available in 5 other fun colors.

And for a splurge in green, Buti’s Pistachio Green Leather Buckled Strap Compact Tote is completely hand made, with contrast white stitching, suede lining and a detachable shoulder strap, for $367.

Whoever said “it isn’t easy being green” just didn’t know where to shop…

Simple, White, Cotton …

The t-shirt is a wardrobe staple turned high fashion and yet … call me a cynic, but I can’t bring myself to spend $50-$150 on a basic white cotton t-shirt.

Instead, I swear by Calvin Klein’s men’s v-neck t-shirt 3-pack in 100% cotton, available from Fresh Pair for $29.50 a pack. They come in basic white or black, and Fresh Pair throws in free shipping for any order over $25.

So Wrong It’s Right

bag

Blame it on an overload of Paris fashion-week party pictures, where the wronger the outfit the righter it is, but I’ve fallen totally, completely, head over-heels in love with this Leopard-Print Bag from Spiegel!

Everything about it is a fashion don’t – from the glossy faux-leopard print handles to the randomly placed faux-croco-embossed panels, ending with the odd gold buckle in front — but put it all together & I can’t get it out of my head!

I can already see myself walking up Rue Saint Honore in a pair of super-skinny cigarette jeans, 5” platform sandals, with a v-neck men’s t-shirt half tucked in, an armful of bracelets, a mismatched vintage Chanel scarf hanging untied around my neck and THIS bag swinging on my arm. Or maybe I’m hallucinating that I’m the third Olsen again … but for $78 I can afford the fantasy & so can you.

Pleather Or Cotton … You Decide

Sunday, March 9th, 2008 at 9:37 am

pleather pants

Paris and London have spoken and the new must have pants are … pleather leggings.

Stop snickering, by mid-Fall you may just find yourself in a dressing room trying on a pair … if there are any left in the stores. But if you know deep in your heart that you really and truly can’t bring yourself to go down this fashion rabbit hole, you CAN still tastefully mimic the look.

Top Shop – the same brand that premiered Topshop Unique pleather leggings at London’s Fall fashion week – has a pair of skinny coated black jeans on sale for around $100 (they’re 50 Pounds, so the definite price depends on the Pound vs Dollar that day).

These cute alternatives are coated and partially nylon so you get a shiny veneer, & if you buy them a little longer they’ll bunch at your ankles just like the leggings, but they can still be worn during the day without raising eyebrows. And the best reason to go with jeans is that the they won’t feel like they’ve shrunk a size and stick to your body like Elmer’s Glue after a night out.

And for those who insist on the original, just bookmark Topshop Unique & check the site weekly – my uneducated guess would have the leggings arriving anywhere from Mid-May to Mid-August.

But whichever style you decide on, Topshop now delivers in 7 business days to the US for a flat fee of 10 pounds – around $20 – no matter how much you order!
