Fun, Flirty Off-The-Shoulder Looks

I love off the shoulder looks because they’re feminine and almost universally flattering, and sexy without the overt, look-at-me message of cleavage or an exposed midriff. With so much 70’s and 80’s influence in this year’s looks, it was only a matter of time before the pretty shapes came down in price from the zillion-dollar spring looks I was seeing at Neiman’s in February. While high-end retailers still carry the lion’s share of these looks, there’s definitely starting to be some trickle down.

One suggestion: There’s a lot of off-the-shoulder peasant tops at stores like Forever 21, all patterned with embroidery. Unless you have a totally rocker haircut or a super-polished look, I’d stay away from these- they can look really costumey. Stick with either the dropped shoulder or the the embroidery- not both at once.

Here’s a few of my favorite looks, from luxe to bargain.

Old Navy smocked off-shoulder top, available in black, white, and a b&w print, on sale for $12.99, available here. This would be so cute with a tailored pant!

Ella Moss off-shoulder top, on sale for $62, Neiman Marcus, available here.

French Connection off-the-shoulder dress, $49(!), available here. French Connection has four more cute off-the-shoulder options, and I saw even more in a department store today, but be prepared to pay about double this pick. Check them out here.

Neives Lavi off-shoulder dress, $374, Shopbop, available here. The ultimate in that “rich hippie” look.
