Fashion Find: Leelee Sobieski

Saturday, May 17th, 2008 at 9:45 am

A reader wanted to know where to find a dress similar to the one Leelee Sobieski wore to the premier of Roman Polanski’s new film Wanted And Desired.

The closest I found is the Eyelet Halter Dress on sale for $23.84 from Forever 21:

For a twist to the look, try the Celtic Charm Tube Dress for $58 from LuLu’s:

For a color inverse, try the Abby Lace Trim Babydoll Dress for $32.80 from Forever 21:

For a complete overlay look, try the Strapless Ruffle Dress from Forever 21 for $24.80:

And for basic black try this Button Ruffle Dress from Go Jane, also available in yellow & orange, for $27.99:

Or for a complete steal … try the Chiffon Babydoll Dress from Forever 21 for $11.50:

Where Did You Get That? (You Don’t Have To Tell)

Saturday, May 17th, 2008 at 9:16 am

I don’t like for people to necessarily know where my clothes came from or how much they cost. I think it takes away from your look overall when other women you know are scrolling through their mental cash registers. That’s why I take particular delight when I find something super-reasonable, utterly brandless, and less expensive than it looks.

Clockwise from top left:
Red by Mark Ecko Boonie Halter top, $39. Available here. This is a pattern I haven’t seen anywhere else in one of this summer’s sleeper-hit colors- navy. It’s indistinguishable from a Shopbop find, and it would be so cute with a high-waisted skirt.
Tribeca by Kenneth Cole Haight Ashbury, $55, available here. This crisp, summery shoe cleverly avoids the hallmarks of the cheap buy: no cork or rubbery sole, no elastic heel strap. Even the bottoms are detailed and cute.
Old Gringo Lubbock, $150. Available here. This real leather, buttery-soft bag is over a foot wide and looks like it’s three time the price. I am obsessed with having it, but it’s the exact price of the lawn mower I need to buy. Angry neighbors or cute purse? Hmm.
Forever 21 wire leaf earrings, $3.80. Delicate, but not cheap-feeling, and the black ones make the prettiest contrast. Available here.

Shopping The Free People $9.95-$29.95 Clearance

Saturday, May 17th, 2008 at 7:35 am

With young Hollywood fans like Miley Cyrus and a solid position under the Urban Outfitters company umbrella, boho-chic brand Free People’s profile seems to grow each year. I’ve always liked the look, but I’m not buying a $48 tank top unless it can sing or something.

Fortunately for us, the retailer’s website has a huge clearance section, divided up by price. The $9.99- $29.99 section is of course my favorite, and while most of the $9.99 stuff is ankle socks and chintzy-looking headbands, the $19.99 and $29.99 range is filled with cute tank top, shorts shorts, the occasional dress, and if you’re really lucky, an amazing piece of jewelry. Here’s a few of my favorites of today’s rack. Clockwise from top left (and you can see this whole price range of the sale section here).

Favorite Terry hoodie, originally $98, now $19.95, available here.
Open shoulder blouse, originally $58, now $29.99, available here.
Charmed snake necklace, brass and hand-carved lucite, originally $128.00, now $29.99, available here.
Canvas button boot, originally $48, now $29.99, available here.
